Couch Surfing - Wroclaw Poland

My CS experience in Wroclaw was odd to say the least but ultimately a great time. I had planned on meeting up with my host Jo when I arrived but little did I know that she had attempted to cancel on me due to a family gathering. (I was traveling overnight during this time).

Luckily she sent a friend in her stead and I ended up here.

The apartment was great but this room was taken so the first of 3 nights I would be sleeping at another apartment 3 mins away. I told them if it was easier I would just get a hostel but they assured me it would work out.

The town itself was great and I can only imagine how busy it in when school is in.

This is one of my gracious hosts.... so humble in fact he could not even show his face.

The first night was spent at a great concert venue that one of the roommates was working so I got to slip in with the others for free which saved even more money than just the cost of my room for the night.

My time in Wroclaw was great and I hope to come back someday. 3 nights were fun but I am guessing that 4 nights come Autumn would be great.

Couch Surfing

I have been a member of the CouchSurfing website for a few year now and I am utilizing this trip to really test it out. For those unfamiliar with the concept let me explain... The site functions similarly to popular social networking sites (myspace, facebook, etc.) but instead focuses on generous travelers.

An individual creates a profile and can search for a couch in the city that he/she plans to travel to. Currently I am staying in Wroclaw, Poland completely for free with some local students. The concept is generally be hosted and then return the favor. The site also focuses on safety with user submitted reviews and vouching so that individuals can read about past experiences had through the site.

Currently I have places to stay lined up in Berlin and Riga, Latvia in the near future and will only have to buy a round or two of drinks while trying to be a gracious guest. If you are not currently a member I recommend checking out CouchSufing.com and signing up.

Night in Kudowa Zdroj, Poland

Here is one of my exotic locations in Poland.

Time was against me in the small spa town (That also specialized in sanitariums?) so it proved impossible to find accomodation. Luckily it was a very safe town that reminded me of the one I grew up in slightly so I decided to stay up through the night and catch the first train out that was sadly not until 6:45am.

As you can see I was still up at 5 and must have easily put in over 10 miles with my pack on to keep myself awake (This is just training to hike some of the Appalachian Trail when I get back).

The guy pictured below (look closely) was there with me so no need to worry mom. He locked himself out of his house and drunkenly passed out in front of his house. I kept a safe distance.

The one spoil I recieved was that en route to sitting near the train station near 3 or 4 am I smelled fresh bread being made and realized that there was a local bakery right across the street so after hours of agonizingly waiting for them to open for the day I loaded up on delicious treats.

At 6:45 am I boarded that train that would average 3 miles and hour until my 11:15 arrival in Wroclaw Poland. I am taking the bus back I think.

Despite my stay I would recommend Kudowa Zdroj to anyone that knowingly goes there and makes reservations. It has an indoor water park and a lot of good bars and restaraunts. Just make sure you book in advance or arrive while there is still daylight.

Off to Eastern Europe

Tomorrow I will finalize my move from Birmingham by flying to Prague in the Czech Republic but I have no plans on staying there long.

I plan to leave the city the same day to head up to Wroclaw, Poland for a few days before returning to Prague. That said, my day looks something like this (if all goes well)

8am Wake up
10:30am Head to airport
12:50pm Fly to Prague
4pm Arrive in Prague (2 hour time difference)
5pm make it to the Prague train station
6pm Catch a train from Prague
8pm Arrive in Nachod (Border Town)
8:30 catch a bus across border to Poland
9:30pm - 10am Hope that there is a connection sometime in this range for me to make it from Kudowa Zdroj up to Wroclaw
Meet the person from the first couch I am surfing at 2pm in the middle of town.

I don't speak the language, I haven't allotted time to sleep, I am trying to do it all on the cheap, and I am making it up as I go. I LOVE TRAVEL
